Saving money on laundry soap

Have you been to the grocery store and seen the prices on laundry soap?!?! If your house is like mine, you are constantly doing laundry on a daily basis. After a while purchasing laundry soap at $17.00 a bottle adds up! For us it would be an annual expense of $408.00. So I decided that I would figure out how to cut that cost. So I searched the internet for the perfect ingredients and came up with these and they work really well.

My son and I have really sensitive skin and so I had to make sure that if we went to a homemade laundry soap, that we would not be allergic to it. So this recipe has worked for our family for about 2 years now and I thought I would share it with you.

Homemade Laundry Soap-Liquid

(Front or Top load machine)

Ingredients:

4 Cups- hot tap water
1 Fels-Naptha Soap bar
1 Cup- Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
1/2 Cup Borax

1 5-Gallon bucket

Directions:

-Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with 4 cups of water. Stir continually over medium-low heart until soap dissolves and is melted.

-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda, and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.

-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of the way with water. Shake before each use as the soap will gel.

-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap is cooled. Ideas on scents: lavender, rosemary, or tea tree oil.

-Yield: Liquid soap recipe make 10 gallons.
-Top load machine-5/8 Cup per load. (Approx. 180 loads)
-Front load machine- 1/4 Cup per load. (Approx. 640 loads)

All the ingredients mentioned above can be purchased on the laundry soap aisle in Wal-Mart. I truly encourage you to try it for yourself. We have been able to save a total of $390.00 a year by making our own soap.

With Love,
